The department of Zoology of Shia PG College has a rich legacy of imparting quality education to science graduates in the city since its inception in 1947. It came into existence when the University of Lucknow extended affiliation to the college and granted it permission to run B.Sc (Bio) with Zoology, Botany and Chemistry as the three subjects.Thevery first Head of the Department was Dr KM Jauhari who held this position for a brief duration of two years (1947-1949) and was succeeded by Dr NN Srivastava whose tenure extended over a span of 28 years (1949-1977) and it was during this phase that the department assumed a position of prominence among the reputed centres of science education in the city. Dr Srivastava had a deep knowledge of the local flora and fauna which enabled him to establish an extremely rich museum with rare collection of animal specimens and slides. This museum continues to attract the attention of visitors and students from other colleges even today. Then it was Dr Agha Hadi Masih who led the department from 1977 to 1994 with utmost dedication towards academic excellence. His administrative skills brought more glory to the department and raised itsacademic standards.Three years B.Sc was introduced during his tenure in 1987 which led to some vital upgrades in the department. Dr Ravindra Bahadur who assumed the chair of the department from 1994-2000 was extremely principled and committed towards the department. He built upon the work of his peers and gave a face lift to the department by acquiring new facilities for the students. The turn of the millenniummarked the beginning of the tenure of Dr KC Misra (2000-2006) which proved to be the most happening period in the departmental history. By a sheer stroke of luck the college saw the appointment of Dr MS Naqvi, a renowned Zoologist, as its Principal. It was the visionof Dr MS Naqvi and the commitment of Dr KC Misra that earned the department permission to run PG classes. It was during this period that a whole new PG block was constructed for MSc laboratories and the library was considerably upgraded. The first batch of MSc passed out in 2008and the course has been running successfully ever since. The dynamic leadership of Dr Ajai Bahadur (2007-2013) further enriched the department and brought about its all round development. Several costly lab apparatuses werepurchased for the instrument section during his tenure. Dr Nafees H Naqvi (2013-2018) whosucceeded Dr Ajai Bahadur as the HoDwas keen to start research activities in the department and also worked for this by allocating a separate research lab but to his disappointment the university did not grant necessary approval to enrollresearch scholars. After the superannuation of Dr NH Naqvi in 2017, the leadership of this department fell into the lapof Dr TS Naqvi who has been assuming this chair for the last 4 years. It is under his leadership that the department is scaling newer heights of success and is growing by leaps and bounds. There have been significant developments in terms of infrastructure and academic standards and the department is keeping its reputation intact by figuring among the most coveted centres of Zoology education at UG and PG levels. It continues to be a dream destination for MSc aspirants and has even produced a few University toppers. The insight of Dr TS Naqviand his meticulous planning ensured a very smooth sailing through the very tough times of Covid-19 pandemic. The department stood to the challenge of online teaching during the pandemic phase and has been quite successful in its efforts to keep the process of learning unhindered and easily accessible to all students. The college management which is extremely cooperative in catering to the needs of students and teachers is looking forward to further upgrade research facilities ever since the enrolment of research scholars was allowed by the university of Lucknow in 2020.Vision :
